Alligator in Everglades National Park

From Kentucky to the north, the Virgin Islands to the south, Louisiana to the west and North Carolina to the east, the southeastern region of the United States is home to seven National Parks, each protecting unique wildernesses and marine ecosystems.

Newfound Gap Mountain Pass

A National Parks vacation in the southeast can include a visit to the largest old-growth floodplain forest in North America in Conagree; the largest subtropical wilderness in the US in the Everglades; Great Smoky Mountain National Park including hundreds of hiking trails including a portion of the Appalachian Trail; and, the world’s longest cave system at Kentucky’s Mammoth Cave.

Vicksburg National Military Park

In addition to National Parks, a visit to the southeast can also include any number of national historic sites, monuments and heritage areas including Mississippi’s Vicksburg National Military Park featuring monuments, a restored gunboat and a national cemetery; Fort Pulaski national monument in Savannah; Alabama’s Tuskegee Airmen national historic site where America’s first African-American military pilots were trained; and, the Tennessee Civil War national heritage area in Murfreesboro, showcasing the national battlefields, cemeteries, historic homes and neighborhoods associated with the state’s Civil War history.
