Northeast Region

Sunset on the Maine Coast Arcadia National Park

The Northeastern U.S. is known for its colorful peaks and valleys, quiet coastal towns and historic landmarks. But a vacation to the Northeast can also include a visit to two National Parks: Maine’s Acadia National Park and Virginia’s Shenandoah National Park.

View from Cadillac Mountain

Acadia was the first National Park east of the Mississippi River. In addition to preserving Cadillac Mountain, the tallest mountain on the Atlantic Coast and one of the first places in the United States to see the sunrise each day, it also protects a series of islands including Mount Desert Island as well as Somes Sound. Highlights of this park include 50 miles of carriage trails and 17 granite bridges designed by John D. Rockefeller, Jr.

Shenandoah is bordered by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the winding Shenandoah River. Prior to being designated a National Park the land was farmland, signs of which can still be found throughout the Park today. Highlights of a visit to Shenandoah National Park can include the 105-mile Skyline Drive that runs the length of the Park and nine waterfalls including Whiteoak Canyon, a series of six waterfalls, and Overall Run, the tallest in the Park.

Cape Cod National Seashore

In addition to scenic National Parks, a visit to the Northeast can include visits to the region’s national historic parks, scenic trails and national monuments. From tranquil trails to historic moments in time, each is perfectly preserved. For instance, the Cape Cod National Seashore offers 40 miles of sandy beaches dotted with lighthouses, cranberry bogs and beautiful coastal vistas. See the birthplace of America’s 35th president, John F. Kennedy, in Brookline, MA, Pennsylvania’s Valley Forge national historic park preserves the Revolutionary War site of 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army. Step back in time to where the “beginnings of America” first came to be in colonial Jamestown.
