Western Mountains

Crowfoot Glacier in Banff National Park

Towering mountains, colorful vegetation, deep fjords and expansive panoramas are just some of the scenic highlights of a vacation to Canada’s Western Mountains area. Comprised of nine regions, the area is home to 10 National Parks and National Park Reserves, each protecting an important area of the country.

Spirit Island National Park

The most popular vacation destinations can be found in the Rocky Mountains region which includes Canada’s first National Park, Banff, the largest National Park in the Canadian Rockies, Jasper, and neighboring Parks, Kootenay and Yoho, all of which, combined, create one of the largest protected areas in North America. Also located in the Rocky Mountains region is nearby Waterton, which together with the United States’ Glacier National Park create the first International Peace Park.

Lake Louise

A vacation to these National Parks can include any number of outdoor activities and visits to popular sights throughout the Canadian Rockies, one more breathtaking than the next. Journey along the Icefields Parkway to the Columbia Icefield, featuring eight glaciers including the Athasbasca Glacier. Visit Banff’s Cave and Basin National Historic Site located at the site of the town’s famous hot springs. Travel to lovely Lake Louise for a stroll along the lake. See Jasper’s Maligne Lake with the much-photographed Spirit Island at its center. Marvel at the Kicking Horse River and its natural rock bridge carved by the rapids. Hike along sparkling Emerald Lake. Or, admire Takakkaw Falls, the second largest waterfall in Western Canada.
